About Waikareao Estuary Walkway
The walkway, also known as Waikareao ara hīkoi, circles the Waikareao Estuary in central Tauranga. The name translates as “sparkling waters of the new day.” The route passes through tidal wetlands and native bush areas, providing close views of the estuary environment.
Boardwalk sections wind through mangroves and offer opportunities to observe local birdlife, including kingfishers, herons, grey ducks, pied stilts and oystercatchers. The path remains largely flat, making it accessible for families and less experienced cyclists.
Supervision is recommended for very young children on the raised boardwalks. The wide surfaces allow comfortable passing between users travelling in opposite directions. The track links multiple streets and reserves, creating a convenient urban loop for regular exercise or leisure.
Wildlife and Scenery
The estuary supports a range of wetland birds and marine life visible from the boardwalks, especially at low tide. Mangrove forests line much of the shoreline and provide habitat for fish and invertebrates. Panoramic views of the surrounding city and harbour open up at several points along the route.
