About Waipapa Track to Waitawheta Hut

From the Waiorongomai Saddle, the Waipapa Track heads north-east along the ridge, a section also known as the Crimson Thread Track. It then swings south-east and passes the Pukekohatu high point at 799 m.

At a junction, the original North-South route continues along the ridge towards Pylon Peak, while the Waipapa Track turns down into the Waitawheta Valley. Follow the signs to Waitawheta Hut. The track leaves the ridge, sidles around the headwaters of the Waipapa Stream and descends gently into the valley to the hut.

The hut sits in a grassy clearing near the Waitawheta River. DOC describes the track as steep and rough, with terrain best suited to experienced trampers, and points to the Waitawheta Tramway as a more family-friendly route.

Waitawheta Hut

Waitawheta Hut is a popular DOC hut on the site of the original Waitawheta cookhouse. A replica sawmill, identical to those used in the kauri sawmilling days, is about 5 minutes down the track from the hut.

Check the DOC hut page for bunks, fees and booking details. DOC says the Waitawheta Tramway Track from Franklin Road is a more family-friendly route to the hut.

Track Conditions and Safety

DOC says: “You need good fitness for this track.” The track is rough, so wear boots with good grip and ankle support.

Stream crossings are unbridged; DOC notes they are normally small but can flood after heavy rain and become dangerous: “if in doubt, stay out.” DOC also warns: “Do not rely on mobile coverage. It is intermittent in this area.” Pack overnight gear including a tent, sleeping bag, map and torch.

If you approach the saddle from the Waiorongomai Valley, note that when we checked on 18 October 2026, DOC had an alert for the Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park area: for the Waiorongomai Valley tracks, “Caution is required at a slip site on the Low Level Loop Track.” Check DOC before you go, tell someone your plans and use Plan My Walk.
