Papamoa is a suburb of the city of Tauranga. Located about 11 kilometres from Tauranga Central Business District. It is the largest residential suburb in Tauranga, having a population of 20,091 according to the 2013 census. It is bordered to the west by Mount Maunganui and the east by the Kaituna River.
Papamoa Beach has a long white sandy beach stretching for 16km. Right from the boundary with Mount Maunganui in the west to the Kaituna River in the east. Widespread settlement of the area did not begin until the early 1980s and prior to this Papamoa Beach was once a largely rural area. Once upon a time, Papmaoa was a rather small community. However, during the summer months, it was often visited by holiday goers and campers.
As of today, Papamoa Beach’s long stretch of paddocks have been taken over by urban development. Having already become Tauranga’s largest suburb, it is still and will continue to rapidly grow. It is currently one of the fastest growing suburbs of Tauranga. With many different subdivisions developing simultaneously on different blocks of land on the fringes of the suburb.
Papamoa Beach is well known as a popular fishing, surfing, and holiday destination. The population of Papamoa (alongside neighbouring Mount Maunganui) grows increasingly larger during the summer months.
Public transport in Papamoa is solely based on bus use. Of course there still exists taxis etc. However, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council subsidizes regional public bus services making it affordable for all users within the Bay i.e. locals and tourists alike.
The suburb is served by four ‘Bay Hopper’ routes; Route 30 (The Boulevard), Route 30x (Golden Sands Express), Route 33 (Papamoa Beach) and Route GL (Goldline).
Near Papamoa Beach is a large shopping area located to the west of Domain Road. This shopping area contains the popular Papamoa Plaza shopping centre, as well as a number of other retailers. Across from the Plaza is another shopping area, Fashion Island (located south of Gravatt Road). There is also a small section of industrial activity located to the east of Parton Road.
Papamoa currently has five schools throughout the suburb.
